What I'm Working On

This is a place I'll be exercising my writing skills, bare for all the world to see.  It may be a monologue on current events, an introspective on my thoughts and feelings, or an expedition into the past with analysis of examples of my early writing.
On rare occasions I'll have excerpts or previews of stories I'm working on.  If you like any of it, subscribe to my mailing list.

After a much longer delay than I'd anticipated, my newest story, Ghosts in the Oleander is finally finished.  The preview draft is complete, at any rate.  I have a couple of folks reviewing it now for any glaring issues, and my son will be creating the cover art this weekend so that hopeully I will have it ready to publish within the next week.
Ghosts in the Oleander is the tale of a man drawn back into a past and identity he'd left behind years before, after a chance encounter with a childhood friend sends him down a trail littered with corruption and murder.  I hope you enjoy it!
David Leavenworth is a father, author, traveler, and unashamed geek.
He has been writing unpublished stories from a young age using Star Wars and GI Joe action figures as inspiration.  (And still does, truth be told.)
He dreams of one day officially working on one of the franchises or fictional worlds he grew up with, but until then he plans to create his own unique stories with hopes that readers enjoy them at least in a small part as much as he enjoys writing them.

I grew up reading comic books.  I wasn't devoted to any one title, character, or even publishing house, although I did generally prefer Marvel books over DC.  Back then I read every issue from cover to cover, including the letters to the editor, and of course Stan's Soap Box in the Marvel titles.  Stan Lee was a name I knew from the age of 8 or so, and his influence on me, either through his story-telling in the comics, or his life advice in the back of the book was deep and lasting.  His death last week (while not a surprise; he was 95 after all), was a sad day for me.  He will be missed, but I'm forever thankful that the world had him as long as we did, and that his legacy will live on in the people he influenced.

My day job has been consuming a lot of my writing time lately, so creatively I've been much more of a consumer; watching a lot of TV series and movies.  A couple of the things I've enjoyed recently have been:
*The Walking Dead (always a favorite)
*Man in the HIgh Castle (about to finish season 3)
  *The Sinner (season 1)
*The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (looking forward to season 2!)
*Bates Motel (just finished the final season).
*Homecoming (don't spoil it--I still have a couple of episodes left)

As things mellow out around the holidays (I know, that seems like a contradiction) I'll go back to working on a multipart story that I set aside last year to make Outer Demon come to life.  Since the framework of this new story has been done for a few years now, I hope to have a preview of the first part up before the end of the year, with the first installment ready to publish by Spring '19.  Hopefully you'll be as interested in reading it as I have been in wanting to tell the tale.
